Cool critters came to Cool 94.3 one June morning. They were here to promote their home, Hemker Park and Zoo in Freeport, Minnesota.
Baby the cockatoo, Gator the alligator, and Jack the jackal were special guests on the morning show. Baby kind of stole the show. According to zookeepers Ann and Jackie, Baby has a vocabulary of 500 to 1,000 words. Like many creatures put in front of a microphone for the first time, she couldn’t think of anything to say, but it was still fun.
The cockatoo is a type of parrot.
Talking Bird Fun Fact: At the funeral of President Andrew Jackson in 1845, his pet parrot Poll had to be removed because Poll kept cursing at the guests.
The creature pictured below didn’t come from Hemker Zoo.
He isn’t very talkative either. Still, gotta love it when people give us the bird.
The alligator Ann and Jackie brought was a baby that can grow up to 16 feet in length. The main difference between an alligator and a crocodile is the snout.
Snout Fun Fact: One of the weirdest snouts in the animal kingdom belongs to the proboscis monkey. Her nose looks like it was whacked by an umbrella. Parrot-end first.
Jack the jackal is a cutie, but the American jackal is considered the most aggressive. There was a book turned into a movie in 1973 called, The Day of the Jackal.
Book Turned Into A Movie Fun Fact: There has never been a book turned into a movie called, The Day of the Spackle.
Hemker Park and Zoo has fun events coming up including Brew At The Zoo in June, Beach Party in July, Fall Zoo Fest in September and Boo At The Zoo in October. They support The Guardians of Conservation to help endangered animal populations thrive.
