Detroit Lakes Couple Lucky to Be Alive After Truck Smashes into Motel Room

Monday, May 9th, two people from Detroit Lakes were seriously hurt when a vehicle smashed into their motel bedroom. The pickup then drove off, but was later apprehended. The couple were staying at the Lakes Inn Motel, and were left trapped in the debris. They were rescued and transferred to the Fargo Hospital

Frank Benninger, 77, had his spleen removed, had half a dozen broken ribs and had three broken vertebrae in his back. Jacklyn Benninger, age 77, was paralyzed from the waist down. She also had a punctured lung, a punctured liver, and numerous fractured ribs. Wade Olds, 55, of Detroit Lakes was heavily intoxicated at the time of the crash and appeared to be in shock. He remembered hitting something but couldn’t describe what. He remains at the Becker County Jail.
