Memorial Day

Memorial Day is Monday.  There are all kinds of fun things going on this weekend – Ole Oppe Festthe Memorial Day Parade, Awake The Grapes, special events at The Viking Speedway – not to mention that it’s frequently folks’ first opportunity to get back in the boat and enjoy the Alexandria lakes area.  Throw something on the grill, get an extra day off – Memorial Day is a great holiday to enjoy friends and family.

It’s a privilege to have leisure time.

This privilege is a gift.

This gift was purchased with the blood of American soldiers. Memorial Day is the day we honor and remember those who died protecting the freedoms we enjoy today.

While you enjoy the weekend, please remember why this weekend is important.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
      In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
      In Flanders fields.

-John McCrae

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance.

Memorial Day is a day to pause and give gratitude to the 1.3 million brave men and women who died to protect the freedoms that we are privileged to enjoy on this beautiful day.
