Being new to Alexandria I wasn’t familiar with the history of theatre L’ Homme Dieu until recently when I met Nicole Mulder, Executive Director of the theater. I’m sure the stage, the lodge building and the cabins are filled with many stories of the past, but now in 2021, and after 22 months of being crippled in darkness because of Covid, the theater lights shine bright on a brilliant production of Collide Theatrical’s new dance extravaganza WonderLand, now playing until June 26th. This show will make you fall in love with live entertainment again! Alice finds herself in a very different sort of Wonderland in the production. It takes place at a premier mental institution run by Dr. Andrew Knight. Knight has to treat a man who refers to himself as a “White Rabbit” who suffers from a severe anxiety disorder, a young woman named Alice with body dysmorphia, and a Queen figure suffering from narcissistic rage. The tea party becomes a therapy session as Alice interacts with the other residents and medication is doled out. The 70 minute uninterruped show takes you through 27 songs that fit the story line along with a variety of dancing that at the end has your thinking along with the Doctor, “what is normal?” I found my eyes glued to the action from start of finish and after going through the last year with a pandemic and spending so much time at home, identifying with many of the characters. Every cast member deserves their own separate standing ovation. Wonderland is a spectacular way to spend your evening, and the reason why many patrons should once again return to Theatre L’ Homme Dieu.
