Truck Collides with School Bus near Benson

A school bus was hit by a truck on Monday morning 3 miles northwest of Benson. It came to stop in the ditch, and thankfully did not roll. 8 children were inside, one hit their head and was taken to the hospital along with the 23 year old man from Benson who was driving the truck.  The 69 year old  bus driver, a man from Clontarf, had no injuries.

bus 2According to the Swift County Sheriff’s Office, on February 7, 2022 at approximately 7:35 am, Swift County Dispatch received a 911 call for a School Bus vs Pick-up at the intersections of Co. Rd 22 and 10th Ave NW, Benson. The bus had 8 children and the bus driver who were traveling east bound on Co Rd. 22 and the pick-up who was traveling south on 10th Ave. The pick-up struck the side of the school bus directly in front of the rear axel pushing the bus into the ditch where it stopped. The bus stayed upright and did not tip over. Air bags were deployed in the pick-up which came to a rest on Co. Rd. 22.

The driver of the pick-up Joshua Manzke 23 of Benson was transported to the Benson hospital for observation. The driver of the bus Charles Jobgen 69 of Clontarf was checked at the scene with no injuries. The children on the bus were also checked by ambulance personnel after being put on a second bus to stay warm. One of the children was picked up at the scene by their parent as the other seven children continued to school for the day. A passerby also stopped and had taken children into her vehicle to keep the kids warm as emergency personnel responded.
At this time there are no life threatening injuries with only one person taken to the ER for observation.
Emergency Agencies responding to the accident were, Swift County Sheriff’s Office, Benson Police, Pope County Sheriff’s Office, Centra Care Ambulance, Benson Fire Department and Minnesota State Patrol. The crash is still under investigation with more information to follow.
